The Lost Episodes of the Earth

2024
Lasercutted silkscreen cardboard, maps, paper
Two series of 4 works, 30×40 cm, edition of 5

Both parts in the series The Lost Episodes of the Earth center around how to map glacier loss. A major query for cartographers is how to represent moving borders, in this case glacier retreat, on a map. The Lost Episodes of the Earth shows a selection of glaciers in Switzerland that are about to completely disappear. In each work, the passe-partout marks the outline of the specific glacier from around 1864, the year in which all of Switzerland was mapped for the first time. The underlying maps are from 2024 and indicate the current, nearly vanished state of the glacier. In this way, the works visually combine the historically mapped and up-to-date state of the glacier.

In The Lost Episodes of the Earth pt. 2 the maps are replaced with blue paper. The second part of this series highlights what once was a body of ice. All depicted glaciers in both series are 1:25 000 in size.

The series comprises:

The Lost Episodes of the Earth pt. 1 (Ghiacciaio de Mucia)
The Lost Episodes of the Earth pt. 1 (Vadrec di Brasciana)
The Lost Episodes of the Earth pt. 1 (Vadrec da l’Albigna)
